90° Long Radius Elbow for Iraqi Pipeline Project: 1″ SCH 160 ASTM A234 WPB
Haihao Group has completed the supply of a 1-inch 90° long radius elbow for a customer in Iraq. The fitting was specified as a seamless carbon steel elbow with SCH 160 wall thickness, ASTM A234 Grade WPB material, ASME B16.9 dimensional requirements, and NACE MR0175 compliance.
For a small-diameter fitting, the specification is relatively demanding: the combination of SCH 160 wall thickness, seamless construction and sour-service requirements requires close control of material, forming and end preparation.
Product Specification
The supplied A234 WPB elbow is designed for butt-welded pipeline installation. The order specification is summarized below:
| Product | Type | Size | Wall Thickness | Material | Standard | Service Requirement |
| 90° Long Radius Elbow | Seamless | 1″ | SCH 160 | ASTM A234 Grade WPB | ASME B16.9 | NACE MR0175 |
Why This Specification Matters
The A234 WPB elbow combines a carbon steel fitting material with a heavy SCH 160 wall. ASTM A234/A234M covers wrought carbon and alloy steel fittings in seamless and welded construction for pressure piping and pressure-vessel applications.
ASME B16.9 provides the dimensional, tolerance, rating, testing and marking requirements for factory-made wrought butt-welding fittings. The current ASME specification covers fittings from NPS 1/2 through NPS 48 and includes long-radius elbows.
For this Iraqi order, the 1″ SCH 160 elbow therefore had to satisfy more than simply the nominal size. The wall thickness, material grade, seamless construction and specified NACE requirement all formed part of the purchasing specification.
90° Long Radius Design for Piping Installation
A 90° long radius elbow changes the direction of a pipeline while maintaining a smoother flow path than a short-radius configuration. Under ASME B16.9, long-radius elbow dimensions are standardized according to nominal pipe size.
For the Iraqi project, the compact 1-inch size was combined with SCH 160 construction. This makes the A234 WPB elbow suitable for a piping specification where a heavy wall is required while retaining a standardized butt-welding connection.
The welding ends were supplied according to the stated project specification, allowing the elbow to be incorporated into the customer’s piping fabrication and installation work.
NACE MR0175 Requirement
The order also specifies NACE MR0175, which is an important requirement when piping components are intended for environments where sour-service considerations apply.
Rather than treating the NACE requirement as a separate item from manufacturing, Haihao Group considers the material specification, production controls and required inspection documentation together. This approach helps ensure that the delivered A234 WPB elbow matches the project specification rather than only the basic dimensional requirements.
Quality Control from Material to Finished Fitting
For a heavy-wall seamless elbow, dimensional consistency is particularly important at the welding ends and along the formed section. Haihao Group controls the fitting against the applicable purchase requirements, including material identification, dimensions and visual condition.
ASTM A234 also includes requirements associated with mechanical and hydrostatic testing of fittings, depending on the applicable specification and order requirements.
For this order, the focus was clear: 1″ SCH 160, ASTM A234 WPB, ASME B16.9 and NACE MR0175.
Haihao Group: Carbon Steel Fittings for Project Applications
This Iraqi shipment demonstrates Haihao Group’s ability to manufacture and supply specification-driven pipe fittings for international pipeline projects. While the fitting itself is only 1 inch, its specification includes several requirements that must work together-from seamless carbon steel construction and heavy wall thickness to dimensional compliance and sour-service requirements.
If your project requires A234 WPB elbow, SCH 160 fittings, NACE-related requirements or other ASME-standard pipe fittings, Haihao Group can review your drawings, datasheets and purchase specifications and provide a suitable manufacturing solution.
