Differences between ASTM A182 GR F347 and ASTM A182 GR F5 materials

Haihao Group recently supplied Belarusian clients with a range of high-quality piping components, including elbows and tees, manufactured from two distinct materials: ASTM A182 GR F347 and ASTM A182 GR F5. While both are premium-grade materials used in industrial applications, they differ significantly in their composition, mechanical properties, and optimal applications.

1.Chemical Composition

ASTM A182 GR F347:

This is a stabilized stainless steel alloy, with columbium (niobium) added to prevent intergranular corrosion. Its chemical composition includes higher levels of chromium (17-19%) and nickel (9-13%), making it highly resistant to oxidation and corrosion in harsh environments. The presence of niobium also enhances its performance under high temperatures.

ASTM A182 GR F5:

GR F5 is a low-alloy steel containing chromium (4-6%) and molybdenum (0.45-0.65%). This material provides good resistance to oxidation and moderate corrosion resistance. The addition of molybdenum enhances its strength at elevated temperatures, but its corrosion resistance is lower compared to stainless steel.

2.Mechanical Properties

ASTM A182 GR F347:

Higher ductility and toughness, making it suitable for environments with fluctuating temperatures and corrosive substances.

Excellent creep resistance, allowing it to maintain stability and integrity under prolonged exposure to high heat.

ASTM A182 GR F5:

Higher tensile and yield strength compared to F347, particularly at elevated temperatures, due to its low-alloy composition.

Lower ductility compared to stainless steel grades, but sufficient for many high-pressure applications.

3.Performance in Corrosive Environments

ASTM A182 GR F347 outperforms GR F5 in highly corrosive environments due to its stainless steel composition and the stabilizing effects of niobium. In contrast, GR F5 provides adequate corrosion resistance in less aggressive conditions, with the advantage of higher strength.
