The difference between butt welding and socket welding

Butt welding and socket welding are forms of welding connection between flange and pipeline.Socket welding usually inserts pipeline into flange for welding.Butt welding is a butt welding flange.Pipeline and butt joint are welded.Therefore,butt welding flange is recommended for the high requirement of weld detection.In general, the requirement of butt welding is higher than that of socket welding,and the quality after welding is also good,but the detection method is relatively strict.Radiographic inspection is needed for butt welding,magnetic powder or penetration inspection for socket welding (such as carbon steel for magnetic powder and stainless steel for penetration).

If the requirement of fluid in pipeline for welding is not high, socket welding is recommended.The form of socket welding,which is easy to detect, is mainly used for welding small caliber valves and pipes, fittings and pipes. Small-caliber pipelines are generally thin-walled, prone to edge misalignment and ablation, and difficult to butt welding, which is more suitable for socket welding. In addition, socket welded sockets have a reinforcing effect, so they are often used under high pressure.However, socket welding also has shortcomings.One is that the stress condition after welding is not good,and it is prone to weld incomplete, and there are gaps in the pipe system. Therefore, socket welding is not suitable for the pipeline system used for the sensitive medium of crevice corrosion and the pipeline system with high cleanliness requirements.

Moreover, the wall thickness of ultra-high pressure pipeline is very large even if it is small diameter, so butt welding can be used to avoid socket welding as far as possible. In short, fillet weld is formed by socket welding, while butt weld is formed by butt welding. From the strength and stress of the weld, the butt joint is better than the socket joint. Therefore, the butt joint should be used in high pressure level and bad service condition.
