A consignment of flange bolting and seamless steel pipes left our warehouse recently, bound for a fluid transfer project in Kenya. The order came from a local pipeline contractor and covered both the line pipe and all the ASTM A193 B7 stud bolt assemblies needed to make up the RF flanges in the field.
Six bolt sizes for one flange schedule
The fastener package broke down into six stud bolt set sizes, all rated for 150CL (150 lb) flanges with raised face surfaces. Every set was supplied as a matched, ready-to-install kit: one alloy stud, two heavy hex nuts, and two hardened washers. Dimensions ran from M14×64 and M16×120 on the smaller branch connections, through M27×150 and M30×159, to M33×182 and the longest set, M33×232, specified for the heaviest flanges on the main line. Why B7 and 2H
For the material grade, we supplied the studs to ASTM A193 B7 and the nuts to ASTM A194 2H. This ASTM A193 B7 stud bolt combination is the default choice on most 150# carbon steel flange joints because it covers the temperature and pressure range of general water and process piping without over-specifying. Each stud bolt was shipped with a Mill Test Certificate traceable to its heat number — a document the contractor needed before the cargo could clear customs at Mombasa.
Packed for the voyage
The seamless steel pipes in the same shipment were cut to the lengths shown on the isometric drawings and checked for wall thickness and end bevel before loading. Cartons were lined with VCI paper so the threaded ends of every stud bolt and the pipe bevels would arrive without corrosion. Each box was stenciled with size, quantity, and heat number to speed up receipt at site.
Sourcing the pipes and the bolting from one supplier also meant the contractor did not have to match a flange schedule across three or four vendors. One drawing went to us, one certified package came back.
