On December 20, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) announced the signing of a construction contract with Netherlands-based SBM Offshore for the sixth 230-million-barrel “Universal” Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel hull. This milestone further solidifies SWS’s position as a leader in high-end shipbuilding, contributing to cutting-edge offshore energy solutions.
The FPSO follows SBM Offshore’s proprietary “Universal Hull” design concept, boasting a storage capacity of 230 million barrels of crude oil. With a total length of 333 meters, a beam of 60 meters, and a depth of 33 meters, the vessel’s deck area spans the equivalent of three standard football fields. Weighing in at an impressive 460,000 tons, it is equipped with a multi-point mooring system, enabling it to operate effectively in diverse ocean environments, including the challenging conditions of West Africa and South America.
With this new agreement, SWS has now secured contracts for six FPSO hulls from SBM Offshore, with five already delivered. Notably, the first four FPSOs were handed over in 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023. The fifth vessel, the “Jaguar” FPSO, commenced construction in April 2023 and was successfully delivered on November 14, 2023.
The delivery of the “Jaguar” FPSO marks a significant milestone for SWS, coinciding with the shipyard’s 25th anniversary. Over the past two and a half decades, SWS has completed and delivered 579 vessels and offshore platforms, amassing a total of 125.87 million deadweight tons (DWT). This achievement positions SWS as the first Chinese shipyard to surpass the 100-million DWT milestone and the only global shipbuilder capable of constructing a diverse range of vessels, including large cruise ships, car carriers (PCTCs), container ships, bulk carriers, oil tankers, and offshore engineering platforms.
We will continue to pay attention to the progress of the project and strive to play our role in it.For more information on Haihao Group’s products and services, reach out to us today! Email:sales@haihaogroup.com
