The first natural gas liquefaction storage and handling device of the Arctic LNG-2 project is installed in place

The Arctic LNG-2 project’s inaugural liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and offloading unit, which set sail from Murmansk, has successfully completed its maritime journey. It arrived on the western coast of the Gydan Peninsula in Western Siberia on August 13th and was permanently anchored to the seabed on August 16th. Subsequently, it will be connected to onshore infrastructure as it enters the final commissioning phase. The project is scheduled to commence LNG production by the end of this year or early next year.

This massive LNG storage and offloading unit, weighing 640,000 tonnes, is situated on a concrete gravity-based structure (GBS). It was transported from the specialized shipyard operated by Novatek, near the northern Russian port of Murmansk, known as Belokamenka. The first LNG storage and offloading production line boasts an annual capacity of 6.6 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas, with the majority of components being pre-commissioned at the Belokamenka shipyard before transportation.

Onshore complementary infrastructure, including connecting pipelines, administrative and office modules, power generation, and gas supply facilities, has already achieved a 99% completion rate.

This LNG plant will process up to 18 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, sourced from the onshore Utrenneye oil field on the Gydan Peninsula, where 70 production wells have been drilled. Novatek still plans to install the second and third LNG storage and offloading production lines for Arctic LNG by 2026.
