What’s the difference between casing pipe and drill pipe?

Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) include a range of rolled metal products, commonly known as drill pipe, casing and tubing for the petroleum industry. Both are used in the drilling process.Do you know the difference between casing pipe and drill pipe?

Different purpose

The drill pipe is a durable steel pipe that transmits force to the bit during drilling. In many cases, the drill pipe turns the drill bit, which cuts through the rock until it reaches the sediment.Drilling with drill pipe is the first stage of each wellbore.

Casing, refers to casing pipe which is the tubing installed in the well to protect and support the wellbore flow. The casing is connected to the wellbore to protect the soil and, in particular, the groundwater from drilling mud and fracturing fluids. It also stabilizes the wellbore, so the casing must be able to withstand exceptionally high loads.

Different standards

Spec 5D is a combination requirement for drill pipe according to API standard. The purpose of this code is to provide a standard for drill pipe used in drilling and production operations. The API 5D specification covers groups 1 (Class E drill pipe) and 3 (drill pipe of all high strength classes :X-95, G-105 and S-135) in terms of naming and wall thickness.

APT 5CT specifies the requirements for casing and tubing used in oil and gas production. Casing must be made of materials with sufficient strength and function. The standard covers requirements for three product specification levels (PSL-1, PSL-2, and PSL-3) and several levels (API 5CT J55, K55, N80, L80, and P110).

Different threads

There are too many drilling connection types to choose, but limited for casing pipe.
