What’s the difference between ultrasonic testing and X-ray testing for high pressure pipeline
The instrument which uses the method of ultrasonic testing is called ultrasonic flaw detector. Its principle is: when the ultrasonic wave propagates in the tested material, the acoustic characteristics of the material and the change of the internal structure will have a certain influence on the propagation of the ultrasonic wave. The technology of understanding the material performance and structure change through the detection of the affected degree and condition of the ultrasonic wave is called ultrasonic detection. Ultrasonic testing methods usually include penetration method, pulse reflection method, tandem method and so on. With strong penetration ability, the detection depth can reach several meters.
X-ray testing can penetrate the matter that the general visible light can’t. Its penetration ability is related to the wavelength of the degree X-ray and the density and thickness of the penetrated material. The shorter the wavelength of X-ray, the greater the penetration; the lower the density, the thinner the known thickness, the easier the X-ray penetration. In practical work, the penetrability of X-ray (i.e. the quality of X-ray) is determined by the voltage of the bulb (kV), and the product of the current (MA) passing through X-ray and the channel time in unit time represents the amount of X-ray. The maximum thickness that can be measured is related to the X-ray intensity. Generally, the metal thickness is less than 0.3m.
