Preventive measures for corrosion in open-loop EGCS piping systems
To effectively prevent and control corrosion in open-loop Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) piping, the following measures can be implemented:
1.Increase Inspection Frequency
For vessels equipped with open-loop EGCS, it is essential to increase the inspection frequency of the overboard discharge piping, especially around the weld seams. The management company should arrange for annual thickness measurements to monitor the extent of corrosion. This inspection should also be incorporated into the annual inspection schedule of the classification society to ensure the safety and reliability of the piping system.
2.Underwater Inspection
If possible, divers should be arranged to conduct underwater inspections of the overboard discharge piping to assess the actual corrosion condition. This allows for the early detection of issues, enabling timely interventions and appropriate repair measures.
3.Prompt Repair and Notification to Classification Society
If a leak is detected in the overboard discharge piping, temporary repair measures should be implemented promptly. Additionally, the classification society should be notified for a supplementary inspection. Based on the findings, the classification society will provide reasonable repair recommendations and requirements to ensure the safe operation of the vessel.
4.Simulated Testing by Manufacturers
Before installing a new open-loop EGCS, shipowners or the classification society should require the manufacturer to conduct simulated tests. These tests are to verify the corrosion resistance of the piping and provide recommendations for regular replacements. Such pre-installation evaluations help gauge the corrosion levels, ensuring safe operations for the vessel.
5.Include in PSC Inspection Items
Corrosion issues related to open-loop EGCS piping should be included in the Port State Control (PSC) inspection checklist. This will ensure that any instances of corrosion are identified and addressed promptly. By implementing strict measures and enforcement, shipowners and management companies are encouraged to take proactive steps to mitigate corrosion risks, ensuring the safe operation of their vessels.
