China’s LNG shipbuilding industry achieves remarkable growth
The rapid development of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry is closely tied to the maritime transportation of LNG. In recent years, China’s capabilities and technologies for constructing large LNG vessels have advanced rapidly. To date, China has independently designed, built, and delivered 29 large LNG vessels, with a substantial increase in new shipbuilding orders. By the first half of 2023, China’s share of the global market for large LNG vessel construction has surged to 35%.
Large LNG transport vessels, often referred to as “super-cold storage tanks at sea,” are tasked with creating an environment for LNG storage at temperatures below -162°C. Simultaneously, they must ensure there are no leaks during long-distance voyages, even when encountering rough seas and extreme weather conditions. Due to the immense construction challenges, only a handful of shipyards in five countries worldwide possess the capability to build these vessels.
In 2008, China successfully delivered its first large LNG transport vessel, the “Da Peng Hao.” Today, China has formed several major LNG vessel construction enterprise clusters, primarily comprising five shipbuilding companies. They have achieved international recognition in terms of vessel performance, environmental standards, and technological advancements. From January to July 2023, China accounted for 35% of the world’s new shipbuilding orders, further increasing its market share. The number of industry-related companies involved in the construction of large LNG vessels has grown from just over 20 to more than 120.
